Rick & Thel
Born Richard Carey in Sydney on the 13th August 1927. Finishing his schooling at Technical College in Sydney, Rick trained as a radio technician for a period of three years after which he joined the Air Force as a radio technician for the last two years of the second world war. During his time in the airforce Rick learned to play guitar. Rick met his future wife In 1959.
Thel was born Thelma Hoctor in Glossodia NSW on the 9th October 1929. and until 12 years of age lived on a vegetable and poultry farm. To allow Thel to gain a secondary education the family moved to Sydney where she attended Fort Street Girls High School before moving onto Sydney Teachers College for another four years. Gaining a posting as an art teacher at a Sydney Suburban School until March 1958 when after financial help and encouragement from her brother, Thel purchased a guitar and at 19 taught herself to play by picking away at meledies. It wasn't long before the young Thel was playing chords and singing along to her own accompaniment.
It was at a club where they were both members, that Rick & Thel met and found they they found they had something in common and started singing together. They entered and won the Australian Amateur Hour on the 12 th January 1950. After their win they started getting work around the Sydney Club scene.

As well as being frequent guests on the McKean Sisters 2KY radio show.

Lynne's early schooling was done by correspondance during the many touring dates of her parents, at 8 she started boarding school. Susan had a serious illness as a youngster and passed away at the age of 14 on the 22nd November 1974.
In 1954 Rick & Thel had their first single released on the Regal Zonaphone label [EMI]. The tracks were I'll Never Be Fooled Again and She Was Happy Till She Met You. Song writer - Ken Robertson

After receiving an email with a request for the origins of the Rick & Thel song "For Jenny a Rose" I started by phoning Lynne Carey, then I called Rick after a wonderful chat about old times Rick gave me a number to call the author of the song. I then called Ken and had a very interesting 40 minute chat, I could have sat chatting for an hour.

Ken has visited something like 1,030 towns in his search for authentic stories as inspiration for his many songs. Ken says "you have to be a bit mad to be a song writer", if he is mad, then I really enjoyed talking to this mad song writer.

Rick & Thel recorded many of Ken's songs however the one that was the centre of my search was about the rose for Jenny. This legendary song was a result of Ken's visit to Jerilderie in about 1989, while talking to the publican in a local hotel his daughter came in and said I just planted a rose at the grave.
Ken asked the question "whats this about a rose? the publican told him the story about the child that had been killed in a horse riding fall and few of the school children had each planted a rose bush around the grave. Ken visited the grave site and after speaking to Jenny's mother he wrote the song telling her that he would send her the song before it was released to obtain her approval, this he did but after some time and no reply he rang and spoke to both the mother and father, they were happy with the song and I guess the rest is history.

Down Jerilderie way it is a very popular request by many people visiting the town to seek out the gravesite of this very special little girl.

My sincere thanks to Ken for telling me the story and also to my emailer for requesting the information.

This is an extract from Ken's website
